A tasting of hand-picked wines at the Conrad, Pune

Vishal Kadakia, proprietor, The Wine Park, at the tasting at Kabana, Conrad Pune

Vishal Kadakia, Mumbai-based wine importer and distributor of wines, hosted a Fine Wine Tasting at  the stylish, new, luxury hotel Conrad in Pune, on 19th October 2016. The tasting featured a selection of fine wines from the Wine Park portfolio along with an array of delicious light eats specially prepared for the event by Executive Chef Mandar Madav and his team, reports Brinda Gill.

The selected wines were only those that are registered for sale in Pune. The aim of the wine tasting was to introduce members of the trade in Pune to the wine ethos of Wine Park to promote handcrafted, terroir-driven, storyteller wines.

The communal table at the tasting

Kabana, a balmy spot near the poolside, with a communal wood table set and semi-private seating, offered an ideal venue for the wine tasting. A central table with a variety of light foods comprising salads, cheese, cold cuts, breads and more, two live food stations and four tables with wines, created an attractive, neatly organised space for enjoying tasting wine, nibbling food, and conversing with guests. At the four tables were white and red wines from France and Spain; Italy and Germany; South Africa; New Zealand, Argentina, Australia and India, respectively.

Vishal Kadakia, proprietor, Wine Park, and his team interacted with guests as they tasted wines from the 21 labels presented from 13 wineries, 11 wine regions and nine countries. They represented a great selection of wine from different terroir around the world. The notion of terroir fascinates Vishal as he believes 90% of a wine is made in the vineyard and it is the essence of a vineyard that finds expression in the wine to make it so special.

Reflecting this approach, the tasting featured wines from well-known wineries and their individual terroirs including Marlborough, Barossa Valley, Mendoza, Franschhoek Valley, Rhône Valley, Rioja, Bordeaux and Tuscany. Among them was The Daily Dose, a red wine produced by Wine Park, with organic grapes grown in Solapur, south Maharashtra, with an unusual label bearing an illustration of the winemaking process.

Members of the trade from hotels, restaurants, wine distributors, wine consultants, and winemakers attended the tasting, and were unanimously appreciative of the high quality of wines as well as the aesthetic presentation, the venue and courteous service.

At the end of the evening, Vishal said he was thrilled with the response of the trade. He observed that most of the guests were tasting these wines for the first time and were surprised by the quality and intrigued by the stories behind the labels. Vishal imports only those wines which he personally loves to drink and enjoys the stories revolving around them. He believes, strongly, that wines are very personal.

“The concept of importing quality wines from family driven wineries making terroir-centric wines remains the core offering of our portfolio and the response from members of the trade in new markets strengths our belief in what we do. Wine events are equally about the ambience, food and people as they are about the wines. Kabana at the Conrad Pune did just that as it offered us a picture-perfect backdrop to showcase our wines”
